10yrs later, we still can’t make “Inception”

In 2010, in an interview with Film editor Rajeev Masand, Aamir Khan commented that Bollywood is technically and in headspace far inferior than Hollywood in terms of ability to tell stories well. (The interview link above is 2018 on Youtube but the interview was conducted when Inception first came out a decade ago).

The phrases like ‘leave your brains behind’, ‘mindless entertainers’, are frequently used even till today in context of Masala movies. No doubt, things have improved content wise in last few years and we are making bolder, immersive and yet entertaining cinema. But i can’t come around the fact that this lockdown and mushrooming of OTT platforms would finally lead to such crass being weeded out from Bollywood soon.

Some of the movies released directly to OTT this year have been atrocious. Period. There is no polite way to saying this. Gulabo Sitabo, Sadak2, Laxmii and Coolie no.1 would have been disaster if they actually released in the cinemas. Thank god for the little mercies that we can use the skip or end button. I just hope and pray that someday we can actually make a movie like Inception which forces audience to keep up with it. If not for cinemas, at least on OTT platforms. That will be a good start!
